Exports of flat steel from Ukraine fell to 695.1 thousand tonnes in January–May

In January–May 2026, Ukraine’s steel companies reduced their exports of flat-rolled steel by 3.1% compared with the same period in 2025, to 695.12 thousand tonnes. This is according to calculations by the GMK Centre based on data from the State Customs Service.

Over 80% of exports consisted of hot-rolled flat steel (HS Code 7208) — 562.43 thousand tonnes, down 6.2% year-on-year. The main consumers of the products during the period were Poland — 225.2 thousand tonnes, Bulgaria — 108.07 thousand tonnes and Italy — 49.87 thousand tonnes.

A further 15% of shipments, or 104.29 thousand tonnes (+12.1% year-on-year), consisted of flat cold-rolled steel (HS Code 7209). The main consumer of this product was Poland — 51.82 thousand tonnes. A further 16.37 thousand tonnes were exported to Bulgaria and 2.53 thousand tonnes to Italy.

During this period, 27.45 thousand tonnes of coated flat-rolled products (HS Code 7210) were exported, representing a 13.9% year-on-year increase. 22.22 thousand tonnes of these products were shipped to Poland, and 2.91 thousand tonnes to Romania.

In May, Ukrainian steelmakers exported 120.33 thousand tonnes of flat-rolled products, up 26.4% year-on-year and 19.1% month-on-month. Shipments of hot-rolled flat products totalled 95.06 thousand tonnes (-31.3% year-on-year; -20% month-on-month), flat cold-rolled products – 19.88 thousand tonnes (-7.1% year-on-year; -9.2% month-on-month), and coated flat products – 5.3 thousand tonnes (+42.7% year-on-year; -31% month-on-month).

Revenue from flat steel exports for the January–May period rose by 5.3% year-on-year to $421.72 million, whilst in May it fell by 19.6% year-on-year and 16.3% month-on-month to $78.83 million.

As reported by GMK Center, in 2025 Ukraine increased its exports of flat-rolled steel by 11.2% compared with 2024, to 1.82 million tonnes. Over 82% of exports consisted of hot-rolled flat steel (HS Code 7208) — 1.51 million tonnes, up 10.5% year-on-year. Revenue from flat steel exports for the year rose by 3.9% year-on-year, to $1.05 billion.
