EU imported 249.6 thousand tons of long rolled products from Ukraine in January-August

In January-August 2023, the European Union reduced imports of long products from Ukraine by 24.9% compared to the same period in 2022 – to 249.65 thousand tons. This is evidenced by Eurostat’s data.

The most imported in 8 months was rods and hot-rolled bars (HS 7213) – 127.6 thousand tons, which is 20.7% less than in January-August 2022. The corresponding products account for more than 51% of the total imports of Ukrainian long products into the EU.

Also, 76.5 thousand tons (+34.5% y/y) of carbon steel wire (HS 7217) and 16.5 thousand tons (+11.5 times y/y) of rods and hot-rolled bars in coils made of alloy steel (HS 7227) were supplied to the European market.

The main consumers of rods and hot-rolled bars from Ukraine are Romania and Poland. Over 8 months, 53.5 thousand tons of these products were shipped to the Polish market (-38% y/y), and 54.3 thousand tons (-5.1% y/y) – to the Romanian market.

More than 35 thousand tons of carbon steel wire were shipped to Poland (+56.2% y/y), and 17.5 thousand tons (+43.8% y/y) to Germany. The entire volume of rods and hot-rolled bars made of alloy steels was shipped to the Polish market.

In August 2023, European consumers imported 26.4 thousand tons of long rolled products from Ukraine, which is 40% more than in July, and 11.3% less by August 2022, in particular:

  • hot-rolled rods and bars – 6.73 thousand tons (-2.9% m/m; -51.9% y/y);
  • wire – 10.5 thousand tons (+1.2% m/m; +14.2% y/y);
  • hot-rolled rods and bars from alloy steel – 2.7 thousand tons (+6.6 times m/m; +32.6 times g/g);

The bulk of the products were imported to Poland and Germany within a month.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukraine in January-August 2023 shipped for export 346.1 thousand tons of long rolled products for $269.3 million. Revenue from sales of products abroad decreased by 48.1% compared to the same period last year, and export volumes – by 34.6%.
