Consumption of steel products in Ukraine grew by 39.5% y/y in January-September

In  January-September 2025, Ukraine increased its consumption of steel products (rolled products and semi-finished products) by 39.49% compared to the same period in 2024, to 3.16 million tons. This is evidenced by data from Ukrmetprom.

Over the nine months, 1.24 million tons of metal products were imported into the country, which is 33.7% more on an annualized basis. Imports accounted for 39.17% of the domestic market.

The structure of imports in January-September of this year, as before, is characterized by a significant dominance of flat products over long products (67.14% and 21.28%, respectively). During the same period in 2024, the dominance of flat rolled products over long products was also significant (79.37% and 19.19%, respectively).

In total, Ukrainian enterprises produced 4.84 million tons of rolled metal products in the first nine months of this year (+0.4% year-on-year). Almost 2.92 million tons were shipped for export (-12.2% y/y).

1.92 million tons of rolled products and semi-finished products were supplied to the domestic market, which is 28.5% more y/y. In January-September, Ukrainian metallurgists increased shipments of products to the domestic market, with exports accounting for 60.3% of total production for the period, compared to 68.9% a year ago.

The main export markets for Ukrainian rolled steel products in the first nine months of this year were the EU (79.9%), other European countries (8.9%), and the CIS (6.2%). Among the sources of imports in January-September, other European countries took first place (50.3%), followed by the EU-27 (22.5%) and Asian countries (20.7%).

As reported by GMK Center, consumption of steel products in Ukraine in 2024 decreased by 6.26% year-on-year – to 3.288 million tons. Over the year, 1.235 million tons of metal products were imported, which is 10.2% more year-on-year, and about 4.17 million tons of products were exported, which is 39.7% more year-on-year. Domestic production amounted to 6.22 million tons (+15.8% year-on-year).
