Construction in the EU rose by 0.8% m/m in April

The figure rose by 1.5% y/y

In April 2026, seasonally adjusted output in the EU’s construction sector rose by 0.8% compared with March, whilst in the eurozone it rose by 0.6% month-on-month. Year-on-year growth in the EU stood at 1.5%, and in the eurozone at 0.9%. This is according to preliminary data from Eurostat.

By segment, in April in the EU, building construction fell by 0.3% month-on-month, civil engineering by 1.2%, and specialised construction works by 0.7%. In the eurozone, building construction fell by 0.1 per cent, civil engineering works by 0.8 per cent, whilst specialised construction works rose by 0.8 per cent. Compared with March, the pace of construction fell significantly.

On an annual basis, the market structure remains uneven. In the European Union, building construction fell by 3.2%. At the same time, civil engineering and specialised works rose by 4.1% and 1.8% respectively. In the eurozone, this trend was even more pronounced: building construction fell by 5.2%, whilst civil engineering and specialised works rose by 4.4% and 1.7% respectively.

Among the member states, the highest monthly growth in April was recorded in Romania (+10.3%), Hungary (+6.9%) and Slovenia (+3.6%). The sharpest declines were observed in Slovakia (-6.7%), the Netherlands (-2.2%) and Belgium (-1.6%).

On an annual basis, the sharpest falls in construction output were observed in Belgium (-3.8%), the Netherlands (-3.3%) and France (-2.9%). The highest growth rates were recorded in Slovenia (+31.6%), Romania (+23.8%) and Slovakia (+14.5%).

As reported by GMK Center, in 2025, the total volume of construction in the European Union had risen by 0.5%, indicating a weak recovery in the sector following a 1.3% decline in 2024.
