China’s HBIS Group has stepped up the use of low-carbon technologies

Chinese steelmaker HBIS Group is closely monitoring the development of hydrogen energy and accelerating its comprehensive green transformation. This was stated by the company’s chairman Yu Yong, China Daily reports.

According to him, HBIS has stepped up innovation and application of low-carbon metallurgical technologies.

In mid-December of this year, a continuous casting line for automotive sheet steel based on hydrogen metallurgy was launched at the Zhangxuan High Technology Group’s plant in Hebei Province with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. As the company announced, it is the first of its kind in the world.

Two years ago, the first stage of a 1.2 million tonne hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project was commissioned at the same enterprise.

And in March 2024, HBIS launched China’s first short process project for a hydrogen-based shaft furnace.

“From DRI and specialty materials to automotive sheet steel billets, the hydrogen steel industry chain continues to grow,” said Liu Yanwei, deputy general manager of the specialty steel branch at Zhangxuan High Technology.

In the context of meeting China’s carbon targets, the group conducted research in advance, finding that downstream steelmaking industries are paying more and more attention to reducing carbon emissions from steel production.

The country aims to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

As GMK Center reported earlier, China has been collecting public feedback on new guidelines for reporting greenhouse gas emissions in the steel industry. This step is part of efforts to prepare steel companies to enter the country’s carbon market.

The guidelines are designed to standardize the way greenhouse gas emissions are measured in the industry and meet the needs of the expanding national carbon market.
