China intends to increase scrap processing capacity to 180 million tons by 2025

China’s independent scrap processing companies plan to increase raw material processing capacity by 30 million tons by 2025 compared to 2021 – up to 180 million tons. Steel Orbis informs about it with the reference to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT).

China plans that by 2025, steel production using electric arc furnaces will account for more than 15% of total steel production. By 2030, the index will rise to over 20%.

At the same time, there is a limit to the increase in converter capacity in China, as the country is promoting cleaner steel production.

As GMK Center reported earlier, China intends to increase consumption by 2030 steel scrap by 23% compared to 2020 – up to 320 million tons per year.

At the same time, the country strives to reduce steel production in 2022 after a decrease in output by almost 30 million tons in 2021. The control of steel production is part of China’s efforts to meet the goal of reducing the country’s carbon emissions.

China is the largest steel producer in the world. In 2021 Chinese steelmakers reduced steel production by 3% compared to 2020, to 1.03 billion tons.
