Car production in Germany amounted to 4.1 million units in 2024

The production of passenger cars in Germany amounted to 4.1 million units in 2024, remaining approximately at the level of 2023. This was reported by the German automobile association VDA.

However, according to the association, this figure is still 12% lower than in pre-crisis 2019.

In December 2024, passenger car production in Germany fell by 10% year-on-year to 232.9 thousand units. Exports in the last month of the year were also below last year’s level, down 9% y/y – to 196.3 thousand vehicles. In total, almost 3.2 million vehicles were delivered from German plants to customers around the world in 2024 (+2% y/y).

Over the past year, domestic orders from German manufacturers increased by 12% year-on-year, and in December – by 35% y/y. Orders from abroad developed more slowly: in December they fell by 6% y/y. Overall, foreign orders for the year were at the level of 2023.

The industry association notes that in 2022, the production of passenger cars in Germany grew by 11% y/y, in 2023 – by 18% y/y.

The VDA also noted that in November, the country produced more electric vehicles than in any previous month (155.7 thousand units, + 29% yoy). During the same period, more battery electric vehicles rolled off the assembly lines in Germany than ever before – 120.5 thousand units, and 35.2 thousand plug-in hybrids were produced.

In total, almost 1.3 million electric vehicles were produced in Germany in the first 11 months of 2024, which is more than in the entire year of 2023.

As GMK Center reported earlier, according to the EUROFER steel producers’ association in its Economic and steel market outlook 2024-2025, Q4, production in the EU automotive industry will decline by 6.5% year-on-year in 2024.
