British Steel prepares to increase production and hires new staff

Steelmaker British Steel has announced the recruitment of more than 180 new employees in preparation for a production ramp-up.

As noted, the UK government-controlled company has provided raw materials to support the operation of two blast furnaces and intends to significantly increase iron and steel production in the coming months.

The majority of the open positions – 165 – are in Scunthorpe, with 17 at British Steel’s Teesside and Skinningrove facilities. The positions offered by the company include engineering, production and craft positions.

British Steel’s interim CEO Allan Bell said that with the support of the British government, the company is focused on consolidating its position as one of the world’s leading steel producers. To achieve this goal and meet customer demand, the company is hiring staff and planning to increase production.

The British government has already allocated almost £100 million for British Steel, Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, said during a parliamentary debate.

In April this year, the UK Parliament passed an emergency bill at an emergency session to give the government control over British Steel to prevent the closure of the last blast furnaces in the country. The government was given the authority to manage the company’s staff and operations, as well as to order raw materials to continue production in Scunthorpe. In March, China’s Jingye Group, which owns British Steel, rejected a £500 million government support package.
