Brazil’s ArcelorMittal Pecem reaches design capacity

ArcelorMittal Pecem’s Brazilian plant produced 3 million tons of slabs in 2023, reaching its design capacity for the first time since its launch in 2016. This is reported by SteelOrbis.

Eric Torres, CEO of the company, noted that this result reflects the operational excellence of the plant’s production chain, as each stage of the integrated steel mill is important to achieve the planned results.

According to Torres, the most important elements of production are high value-added steel products. They have now reached 40.5% of the total slabs produced in 2023. ArcelorMittal Pecem produces 243 different product brands.

Last year, the plant also reduced emissions by 8% compared to 2022. This was due to improved blast furnace efficiency combined with increased scrap utilization at the steel processing site. The company has already been operating with emissions 50% lower than those allowed by current Brazilian legislation.

As GMK Center reported earlier, last spring, Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP), a Brazilian producer of high-quality slabs recently acquired by ArcelorMittal, announced plans to increase production and exports to Europe. This was stated by Jorge Oliveira, CEO of South American ArcelorMittal. After acquiring Pecem, the steel corporation increased its flat steel production capacity in Brazil to 10.5 million tons per year. Taking into account long products, the capacity of the Brazilian division increased to 15.5 million tons per year.
