BHP continues cooperation with Swiss ABB in decarbonizing operations

Australian mining company BHP Billiton has announced that it will deepen its cooperation with Swiss ABB in several areas, including the decarbonization of its global operations. This is stated in the message of BHP.

At the end of October, the companies signed a multi-year global framework agreement. As noted, it will provide the parties with additional opportunities to collaborate in supporting project implementation, operations and maintenance, and operational decarbonization progress across all of BHP’s global divisions.

In addition, the agreement may allow the Australian mining company to achieve more sustainable growth in iron ore production.

ABB is a leader in industrial automation, electrification and digitalization and supplies critical technologies and equipment to BHP’s operations, including the Escondida copper mine in Chile, the Jansen project in Canada and various packages for assets in Australia.

The deal comes as the mining company continues to make progress towards its goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions from operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 2050.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the largest state-owned steel producer in India, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), and BHP will cooperate to support the decarbonization of steel production. The parties are already exploring a number of areas of work to support the potential decarbonization of SAIL’s blast furnace steel mills, starting with a scoping study to evaluate various strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
