ArcelorMittal to supply green electricity to service center in Neuwied

Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal, in cooperation with energy company ENVERIO, is implementing a project to build a solar power plant with a capacity of 4.1 million kWh per year to meet the needs of the ArcelorMittal Auto Processing Deutschland service center in Neuwied, Germany. This is stated in the company’s press release.

The solar power plant will be built on the roof of the production facilities and will cover more than 50% of the company’s annual demand. As a result of the transition to green electricity, CO2 emissions from the plant’s operations will be reduced by about 2 thousand tons per year.

“The electricity produced will be supplied directly to ArcelorMittal’s systems. This means that in the future, the location will be able to meet more than 50% of its own needs. The surplus electricity will be sold to the national grid,” the company said.

ArcelorMittal Auto Processing Deutschland GmbH in Neuwied is one of the largest of the company’s 25 distribution centers in Europe. It has been producing high-quality steel sheets for 25 years, including for the automotive and industrial sectors. The photovoltaic project in Neuwied also contributes to the group’s goals: ArcelorMittal aims to reduce 35% of CO2 emissions in Europe by 2030.

“In a steel market that is striving for CO2 neutrality, we, as a production company, are fulfilling our responsibilities and are already minimizing emissions through this initiative. Our goal is to operate in Neuwied with neutral emissions by 2030,” comments Felix Kerk, Chief Operating Officer of ArcelorMittal Auto Processing Deutschland.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, ArcelorMittal’s net profit decreased by 54.1% compared to 2022 – to $4.87 billion. The company’s EBITDA decreased by 46.6% y/y – to $7.56 billion last year. Operating income for the period amounted to $2.34 billion, down 77.2% y/y. Revenue decreased by 14.5% compared to 2022, to $68.27 billion.

In 2023, ArcelorMittal reduced steel production by 1.5% compared to 2022, to 58.1 million tons. Last year, iron ore production decreased by 7.3% compared to 2022, to 42 million tons.

ArcelorMittal is a leading global steel and mining company with operations in 60 countries and production assets in 18 countries.
