Upgrading the treatment system will help reduce environmental impact
ArcelorMittal Poland, the Polish division of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal, is launching a large-scale modernization of the argon cleaning system at its Dombrowa Górnicza plant. This project, worth more than PLN 30 million, is aimed at reducing the company’s environmental impact and improving working conditions. This is stated in the company’s press release.
The steel plant in Dąbrowa has four argon treatment stations. This process improves the surface quality and structure of steel, as well as its strength and, consequently, the characteristics of the final steel product.
The modernization involves the installation of special hoods over each vat that will capture dust and transfer it to a new filtration system through a network of pipelines. As part of the project, a new filter with modern electronics, automation, and software will be built. It is also planned to replace the pipelines for dust transportation and the entire transportation complex.
“We are finalizing the design work and plan to start construction in the first quarter of this year,” said project manager Raphael Gambski.
According to Wojciech Kosciuta, President of ArcelorMittal Poland, this project is part of the company’s strategy to decarbonize steel production, which requires significant efforts and resources.
“We strive to make steel production more sustainable. Modernization of the dedusting system at the argonization station will bring a number of benefits: greater working comfort for our employees, greater production efficiency for our company, and a reduced environmental impact of the steel plant for local residents and all of us,” he said.
This initiative is a continuation of the large-scale investments in the plant, including the recently completed modernization of Maerz furnaces. Thanks to these measures, dust emissions at the plant have already decreased fivefold. The company’s total investment in environmental projects exceeds PLN 70 million.
The project to modernize the cleaning system will be completed by the end of the year, making a significant contribution to improving the environmental situation in the region.
As GMK Center reported earlier, ArcelorMittal Poland has recently started commissioning new hydrogen furnaces in the annealing shop at its Krakow facility. Investments in the project amounted to PLN 52 million ($12.5 million). As a result, the company has eliminated ammonia from the annealing process and reduced its duration, which has reduced natural gas and electricity consumption and cut carbon emissions by 50%.
