ArcelorMittal Temirtau will undergo an environmental audit following an industrial accident

At ArcelorMittal Temirtau, Kazakhstan’s largest steel mill, an inspection will take place after a coke release in the blast furnace. Zakon.kz informs about it with reference to the department of ecology of the Karaganda region.

Specialists should establish the causes and consequences of the incident that happened last week, the results of the inspection will be reported in addition.

On June 7, 2023, in the blast furnace №3 zone, the blast furnace was squeezed out with the release of coke. This led to a fire, but its consequences were quickly overcome. BF was prepared for launch in the evening of the same day. As a result of the incident, no one was injured, nor did it affect the schedule of the company’s workers.

Department of Ecology of the Karaganda Region, according to Kazakhstan Today news agency, conducted laboratory air measurements after the incident – it was found that the maximum permissible concentration of nitrogen dioxide was exceeded by 2.5 times.

As GMK reported earlier, according to the results of an unscheduled inspection in 2022, which lasted from September 5 to October 3, ArcelorMittal Temirtau will pay 1.2 billion tenge for exceeding emission standards. According to the decision of the administrative court of Temirtau, the companies appointed installments for the payment of the fine in three stages until August 15, 2023.

Also, ArcelorMittal Temirtau increased power sheet-rolling shop №1 up to 42 thousand tons of sheet steel per month. The productivity of the workshop increased to a ten-year high. In March 2023, the plant also increased the productivity of the sheet cutting line.

Steelmakers of Kazakhstan in April 2023 increased steel prodution by 6.4% m/m – up to 358.94 thousand tons. In comparison with April 2022, in this period, steel production increased by 0.7%. In January-April 2023, steel production in the country fell by 11.3% y/y – to 1.28 million tons.
