ArcelorMittal Poland reduced steel production by 10.3% y/y in 2023

In 2023, the Polish division of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal reduced steel production by 10.3% compared to 2022, to 3.07 million tons. At the same time, in 2022, the figure decreased by 14.3% y/y – to 3.42 million tons. This is stated in the company’s annual report.

In 2023, ArcelorMittal Poland’s coke production amounted to 3.23 million tons, down 12.8% year-on-year. In 2022, production of the corresponding product decreased by 11.6% y/y – to 3.71 million tons.

In 2023, total steel production in Poland decreased by 13.1% compared to 2022, to 6.44 million tons. Apparent steel consumption amounted to 11.87 million tons. Thus, ArcelorMittal’s enterprises accounted for about half of the country’s annual steel production. Among them are ArcelorMittal Zdzieszowice, ArcelorMittal Świętochłowice, ArcelorMittal Chorzów, ArcelorMittal Sosnowiec, ArcelorMittal Dąbrowa Górnicza, and ArcelorMittal Kraków.

Last year, the division invested about PLN 1.5 billion in production facilities. These funds were used to upgrade existing units and reduce the environmental impact of the business. In particular, the company carried out a major reconstruction of the blast furnace in Dąbrowa Górnicza worth PLN 720 million.

Over the past 20 years, ArcelorMittal has invested more than PLN 10.5 billion ($2.6 billion) in Polish assets. A significant portion of the funds was invested in environmental projects. The investments helped reduce dust emissions by the company’s Polish division by 90% and carbon dioxide by 42% compared to 2004.

ArcelorMittal Group intends to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The interim goal for European plants is to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 compared to 2018.
