ArcelorMittal Poland invests $40.9 million in a coke plant in Zdzieszowice

ArcelorMittal Poland, the Polish division of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal, is investing PLN 165 million ($40.9 million) to modernize its coke plant in Zdzieszowice. This is stated in the company’s press release.

«ArcelorMittal Poland’s coke plant in Zdzieszowice continues modernization work, half of which has already been completed,» the statement said.

Currently, a 90-meter chimney has been built, new gas pipelines have been installed, and construction of a nitrogen oxide reduction unit for each of the CHP boilers using treated coke oven gas has begun. The next step is to modernize three coke oven batteries and demolish an old chimney. All works are scheduled to be completed by 2026.

«The decarbonisation of the steel industry is a major challenge for EU producers, including our company. Ultimately, ArcelorMittal Poland wants to be climate neutral by 2050, but until that happens, we are modernizing our installations to reduce the environmental impact of our production processes. Before we implement new technologies, we will still need coke for blast furnaces, which is why we are paying so much attention to reducing emissions from the coking plant in Zdzieszowice,» comments Wojciech Koszuta, CEO of ArcelorMittal Poland.

At the end of 2023, ArcelorMittal Poland announced that it had put a coke oven battery at its Kraków plant into hot mothballing. This decision is due to two factors: low demand for coke and the ratio of coking coal price to coke price.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, ArcelorMittal Poland invested PLN 1.5 billion ($363 million) in modernization and growth projects at three plants to improve product quality, energy efficiency and plant efficiency. The largest amount was spent on modernizing the blast furnace in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
