ArcelorMittal Hunedoara plans to restart production using billets from Ukraine

Romanian steel producer ArcelorMittal Hunedoara plans to resume operations in November this year, using billets from ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih. This was reported by Economica.net with reference to the president of the steelworkers’ union, Mircea Bordian.

According to him, the plant will restart after November 1, and depending on the price of electricity and scrap metal, an electric arc furnace may also be launched.

Bordian said that all 470 employees of the plant in Hunedoara have been called back to work starting November 1.

In September this year, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara announced the suspension of production for an indefinite period due to the deterioration of the market situation, which continues to be shaped by persistently high electricity costs, limited state support, and growing competitive pressure from imports. These factors have significantly affected the site’s ability to remain competitive in the domestic, European, and international markets.

ArcelorMittal Hunedoara is part of ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products and specializes in the production of steel sections, billets, and long products. The plant operates on the basis of an electric arc furnace and produces 200-300 thousand tons of steel per year.

As GMK Center reported earlier, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara temporarily suspended operations from February 14 to March 31, 2025. The main reasons were high electricity prices and the need to cut costs to minimize financial losses.
