ArcelorMittal has invested €245 million in decarbonization in France over 10 years

ArcelorMittal Méditerranée invested nearly €245 million in environmental protection and ecological projects at its sites in France between 2014 and 2024. This is stated in the corporate newsletter L’acier & vous.

During this period, the company managed to reduce the overall environmental impact of its production by approximately 71%, particularly in terms of nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions, dust, and dioxins.

One of the key elements of this strategy was the modernization of steelmaking at the Fos-sur-Mer plant. The commissioning of a ladle furnace, the site’s first major investment project in the field of decarbonization, played an important role. Investments in the facility amounted to €76 million, with the project receiving €15 million in government support under the France Relance program. By 2025, this will have reduced CO2 emissions by almost 10%.

Thanks to the more active use of scrap metal in production, the company has reduced its consumption of liquid iron per ton of steel, which has enabled it to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 400,000 tons per year at current production levels. ArcelorMittal Méditerranée is also developing infrastructure for receiving and preparing scrap, making it a key element of the circular economy.

At the same time, the company is preparing for the next stage of transformation – an electric arc furnace project, which is currently under development. This step is considered strategic in the context of the EU’s strengthening climate policy and the future full implementation of the CBAM mechanism.

In early December, ArcelorMittal announced that it was preparing to launch the first three lines of a new electric steel production unit at its plant in Maridec (France) by the end of 2025. This is the company’s largest investment in Europe in the last decade, amounting to €500 million.
