ArcelorMittal has completed a $1.1 billion investment in Brazil’s green energy sector

ArcelorMittal Brasil has completed a $1.1 billion investment program in its own renewable energy generation in the country following the commissioning of a solar park at the Babilônia Centro complex in the municipality of Varzea Nova, Bahia state. The new 200-MW plant began operations in March of this year, according to a press release.

The facility is equipped with 365,000 solar panels, and the investment in it amounted to approximately $140 million. With the launch of this asset, the company expects to increase the share of its own renewable electricity generation from the current 61% to 85% by 2030.

The Babilônia Centro complex, established as a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Casa dos Ventos, has received a total of approximately $950 million in investments. Following the launch of the solar phase, its installed capacity reached 753.5 MW. The complex’s wind power plant began commercial operation back in September 2025, and the site itself became a hybrid facility, combining wind and solar generation.

About 90% of the energy produced will be used to power the group’s industrial facilities, while the remainder will be sold on the national market. The company emphasizes that the project is an important step in implementing its energy transition strategy and is expected to enhance the competitiveness and predictability of energy supply. ArcelorMittal also notes that it is the fourth-largest electricity consumer in Brazil.

Locating the solar plant within the Babilônia Centro complex made it possible to utilize the wind farm’s existing infrastructure, including substations and power lines, which optimized capital expenditures and ensured a more consistent generation schedule.

The investment package also includes the ArcelorMittal Energia Paracatu solar park in the state of Minas Gerais, which received an investment of approximately $175 million. Collectively, the three projects added 1 GW of installed capacity to the company.

As a reminder, in 2025, ArcelorMittal increased its net profit by 135.4% compared to 2024, reaching $3.15 billion. The company’s EBITDA decreased by 7.3% year-on-year – to $6.54 billion. Operating income amounted to $3.63 billion, up 9.6% year-on-year. Revenue decreased by 1.7% year-on-year – to $61.35 billion.
