ANNOUNCEMENT: Expert discussion «European experience for ETS implementing in Ukraine»

The Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development Committee of the European Business Association (EBA) invites to join the expert discussion «European experience for ETS implementing in Ukraine».

The event will be held on Tuesday, September 12, in the format of a Zoom conference. The start is at 10:00 Kyiv time. Pre-registration is required, it is available for link.

During the event, the participants will discuss the ways to start ETS in Ukraine, the main obstacles and the necessary resources. In addition, the results of the study of the Committee of Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development of the EBA «Concept of building a system of trading emission quotas in Ukraine. The path to sustainable development, a step towards the EU» will be presented.

The expert discussion will take place in the format of a round table, the following speakers are scheduled to speak:

  • Maryna Denysiuk, senior project manager of the Office of Reforms of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine;
  • Volodymyr Buzhan, Head of Energy and Climate at the Center for Economic Recovery;
  • Pavlo Masyukov, deputy director of the project «Support for the implementation of the scheme for trading greenhouse gas emissions (ETS) in Ukraine», GIZ;
  • Maxim Fedoseyenko, head of strategic projects at KSE Institute;
  • Natalia Kushko, Senior Fellow, ERCST;
  • Stanislav Zinchenko, CEO of the GMK Center, chairman of the Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development Committee of the EBA;
  • Andriy Glushchenko, GMK Center analyst;
  • Olga Boіko, coordinator of the Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development Committee of the EBA.

This event will be the first in a series of discussions aimed at starting a public debate on the future design of the carbon emissions trading market for Ukraine in the process of European integration.

The creation of a quota trading market is one of the country’s obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU. At the same time, the strengthening of requirements for the bloc’s member states and trading partners regarding compliance with social and environmental standards requires Ukraine to take decisive action in meeting climate goals, launch a market carbon pricing mechanism, develop financing tools for projects to reduce emissions and prevent carbon leakage.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the Ukrainian analytical center and consulting company GMK Center has been a member of the EBA since 2019, and is also a member of the Association’s Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development Committee.
