AMNS India launches first specialized scrap processing facility

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) has commissioned a specialized scrap processing facility with a capacity of 120 thousand tons per year at its plant in Khopoli, Maharashtra. This is stated in the company’s message.

This is the first of four facilities that the company plans to develop across the country as part of its investment program worth INR 350 million. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the domestic scrap supply chain and meeting the growing demand for this raw material in the steel industry.

The commissioning of this facility follows a successful pilot project that involved large-scale scrap processing. AMNS India’s customers, including automakers and fleet operators, are increasingly turning to recycled steel to achieve their sustainability goals.

According to Akshaya Gujral, Executive Director, Recycling Operations, AMNS India, the Hopla facility, along with future facilities, will help formalize scrap production, meet the growing demand for recycled steel and contribute to the country’s decarbonization goals.

The expansion of scrap recycling by the company is in line with government initiatives, including the Vehicle Recycling Policy and Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, which come into force in April this year, as well as the national green steel taxonomy.

India aims to increase the use of scrap in steel production to 50% by 2047. AMNS India plans to increase the share of this raw material to more than 10% from the current 3-5% by 2030.

In addition, the company announced the acquisition of a land plot in Andhra Pradesh as part of its plans to build a modern integrated steel plant. An initial payment has been made, and the company expects to take possession of the land soon.

The planned initial capacity of the plant will be 7.3 million tons per year. The project reinforces AMNS India’s commitment to contribute to India’s national aspirations to achieve 300 million tons of steel production per year by 2030.

As GMK Center reported earlier, AMNS India is building the world’s largest stand-alone integrated steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat. The plant will have a capacity to produce 24 million tons of steel per year and is expected to be completed by 2029.
