A new rolling plant worth hundreds of millions of zlotys to be built in Polish Silesia

The construction of a new large-scale steel rolling plant has begun in the Polish city of Siemianowice Śląskie, on the territory of the former Jedność rolling mill. The project was initiated by Cognor Holding S.A., investmap.pl reports.

Investments in the project are estimated at PLN 800 million, making it the largest industrial enterprise in the Silesian Voivodeship. Construction is scheduled to be completed in December 2024, and production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2025.

The general contractor of the project is STRABAG, which will spend more than PLN 300 million on construction work. The design is carried out by Gliwickie Biuro Projektów Budownictwa Przemysłowego Projprzem S.A. In June-July, the company started assembling the plant’s equipment, which is capable of producing 450 thousand tons of products per year.

The new rolling mill will include modern production shops and infrastructure facilities with a total area of 54 thousand square meters. The main buildings of the complex will be three large production shops.

The complex will also include warehouse and administrative facilities, including a fully automated high-bay warehouse, the first of its kind in Europe, as well as the latest energy-saving and environmentally friendly installations that minimize harmful emissions and energy losses. Cognor Holding notes that the new engineering solutions will help make the production process as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible.

As part of its cooperation with the city authorities, the company has signed a letter of intent that provides for the necessary infrastructure works to facilitate the plant’s operation. According to the agreement, the city of Siemianowice Śląskie will prepare project documentation and carry out administrative procedures for the construction of a 400-meter road connecting Stalmach and Konopnicka streets.

The new plant is expected to create about 150 jobs. Some of the employees will be recruited from Cognor Holding’s closed rolling mill in Zavertsi.

Earlier, the Boryszew SA industrial group announced the decision of its subsidiary Alchemia SA to start the process of liquidating the Rurexpol pipe branch in Czestochowa. According to trade unions, nearly 260 people will lose their jobs by February 2025 due to the liquidation of the branch.

In 2023, steelmakers in Poland reduced steel production by 13.1% compared to 2022, to 6.44 million tons.
