The company became the first integrated steel producer in India to be certified under the government's taxonomy
AMNS India (a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel) has become the first integrated steel producer in the country to receive a “green steel” certificate from the government for its low carbon emissions during production. This was reported by The Economic Times, citing a statement from the company.
AMNS India CEO Dilip Ommen said that the company’s hot-rolled products (coils and sheets) received a four-star rating, while cold-rolled products received a three-star rating. He noted that after receiving certification, the company launched commercial production of such products for domestic consumers, which allows customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions in their value chains.
Ommen noted that about 65% of the company’s steelmaking capacity is based on the direct reduction of iron (DRI) method using natural gas, which reduces dependence on coal. This has contributed to a reduction in carbon intensity of more than 35% since 2015.
In 2024/2025, AMNS India achieved carbon emissions 14% below the national average. The company aims to reduce emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to the 2021 baseline.
It should be recalled that in December 2024, the Indian government announced a formula for determining green steel, according to which such products are ranked in three categories based on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during production. Steel produced with CO2 emissions of less than 2.2 tons per ton of rolled product will be considered three-star green, while emissions below 1.6 tons per ton of alloy will be considered five-star.
The country’s steel ministry approved the relevant taxonomy in March 2025, and it will come into force in the 2026/2027 financial year. The rating criteria will be reviewed every three years. The Energy Efficiency Bureau (BEE) has been tasked with creating and maintaining a state register of green steel based on NISST conclusions.
