The company seeks to adapt production rates to the challenging European market

Automotive giant Stellantis plans to suspend production at several European plants, AFP reports, citing information from the company.

Stellantis said it will likely halt production at its Eisenach plant in Germany for two days next week ahead of a national holiday. The company explained that this move is aimed at adapting production rates to the challenging European market and, at the same time, effectively managing inventory until the end of the year.

This plant is one of the European facilities where Stellantis has decided to temporarily halt production. The shutdowns are scheduled for late September-October, with the duration depending on the plant and the car models produced there.

Thus, from September 29, the company will suspend production of two car brands in Pomigliano (Italy), writes The Detroit News. Separately, Stellantis confirmed the shutdown of the plant in Poissy near Paris (France) from October 13 to 31. The plant in Tychy (Poland) will also face a temporary shutdown.

French newspaper Les Echos also reported similar measures in Zaragoza and Madrid (Spain).

Stellantis is not the only European automaker facing difficulties. Last week, Volkswagen lowered its forecasts for 2025, preparing to cut 35,000 jobs in Germany.

In January-July this year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, new car registrations in the EU fell by 0.7% year-on-year, with production remaining well below pre-pandemic levels.

It should be noted that the EU automotive sector is experiencing a deepening crisis. According to EUROFER, in the first quarter of 2025, car production fell by 11.4% year-on-year. This is the fifth consecutive quarter of decline.
