Imports of finished products increased by 34.7% in six months

In January-June 2022, US steel enterprises increased steel imports by 14.3% compared to the same period in 2021, to 14.7 million tons. This is reported by the data of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) .

The volume of finished products in the United States in January-June amounted to 9.97 million tons, which is 34.7% more than in the first half of last year.

At the same time, in June, the States increased steel imports by 2.3% compared to the previous month, to 2.81 million tons. The volume of finished products in total imports for the month amounted to 2.2 million tons. This is 6% less compared to May 2022.

According to the results of 6 months, the main sources of steel imports to the USA are Canada, Mexico and Brazil – 3.58 million tons, 2.95 million tons and 1.55 million tons, respectively.

In 2021, the States increased steel import by 43% compared to 2020, to 31.5 million tons. Imports of finished metal products decreased by 41% over the year, to 22.8 million tons.

The US is one of the ten largest steel producers in the world according to World Steel. In 2021 the country has increased steel production by 18.3% compared to 2020 – up to 86 million tons.
