Transportation of ferrous metals amounted to 360 thousand tons in the month
In November 2024, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) reduced the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 5.5% compared to the previous month to 2.347 million tons. The figure increased by 1.2% compared to November 2023. This was reported to GMK Center by the press service of the railway operator.
The company transported 1.346 million tons of raw materials to seaports, or 57.3% of the total volume of iron ore exports. The volume of land crossings was 1 million tons (42.7%).
In November, ferrous metals were transported for export in 360 thousand tons, up 5.9% month-on-month and 11.5% less than in November 2023. Ports transported 253.2 thousand tons of relevant products (70.3% of total exports of ferrous metals), and land crossings – 106.7 thousand tons.
In total, in November 2024, UZ transported 13.96 million tons of cargo, which is 7.3% less than in the previous month and 1.2% less than in the previous year.
“The massive shelling has a significant impact on the energy sector, certain industries, and transport infrastructure, which affects the dynamics of cargo transportation,” UZ said.
In export traffic, 6.4 million tons of cargo were transported over the month, which is 10.5% less than in the previous month and 5.1% more than in the previous year. In the structure of export transportation, the key positions are occupied by: grain – 2.58 million tons (40.3% of the total volume of cargo handled), iron ore (36.7%), and construction materials – 395 thousand tons (6.2%).
In January-November 2024, export transportation of iron ore amounted to 30.02 million tons (+1.8 times y/y), grain – 31.43 million tons (+57.2% y/y), ferrous metals – 4.69 million tons (+14.3% y/y). In total, UZ transported 160.9 million tons of cargo over the period, up 19.4% y/y. The company transported 77.46 million tons of cargo for export (+56.9% y/y).
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. The transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
