Volumes of transportation of ferrous metals for export increased by 23.1% m/m

In November 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ)  increased iron ore transportation in export traffic by 20.4% compared to the previous month – to 2.32 million tons. Compared to November 2022, the figure increased by 3 times. This is evidenced by the data of the railway operator.

43.3% (1.01 million tons) of the total volume of iron ore exports were transported through land border crossings with the European Union. 56.7% (1.31 million tons) of raw materials were shipped to seaports.

In January-November, Ukrainian Railways transported 17.19 million tons of iron ore in export traffic, down 19.5% compared to the same period in 2022.

The volume of export transportation of ferrous metals in November 2023 increased by 23.1% m/m and 76.3% y/y – to 407 thousand tons. Cargo traffic to ports accounted for 64.4% of the total transportation volume, and 35.5% – through land border crossings.

Export volumes of transportation were distributed as follows by the main nomenclature:

  • other rolling stock – 174.7 thousand tons;
  • pig iron – 109 thousand tons;
  • steel billet – 120,000 tons;
  • others – 3.1 thousand tons.

In January-November 2023, UZ transported 4.1 million tons of metal products for export, which is 22.6% less compared to January-November 2022.

In total, Ukrainian Railways transported 14.13 million tons of cargo in November, up 4% m/m and 33.8% y/y. In January-November, UZ reduced cargo transportation by 4.1% y/y, to 134.7 million tons. For 11 months, 49.37 million tons of cargo were transported in export traffic, down 10.5% y/y, and in November – 6.08 million tons (+24.7% m/m).

As GMK Center reported, in 2022 Ukrainian Railways reduced transportation of iron and manganese ore by 59.2% compared to 2021 – to 41.7 million tons. Volumes of transportation of ferrous metals last year decreased by 57.8% y/y – to 9.2 million tons. In total, during the year UZ transported 150.6 million tons of cargo, which is 52.1% less compared to 2021.
