Electricity market reform

The increase in demand for electricity is due to the stable operation of the power system

In January 2024, Ukraine’s industry increased electricity consumption by 27.2% compared to January 2023, to 2.4 billion kWh. This is also 82 million kWh more than in the previous month. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy.

«This winter, the Ukrainian industry consumes significantly more electricity than last year,» the Ministry said.

The increase in demand for electricity is due to the stable operation of the power grid compared to significant interruptions at the beginning of last year.

Electricity consumption by households has also increased. In January this year, household consumers used 13.5% more electricity than in the same period in 2023 and 101 million kW more than in December 2023.

«It’s been a year since Ukrainians have been living without hourly blackout schedules. This winter, in particular, we are ending this year in a stable manner – with electricity and heat, despite all the negative forecasts. We managed to achieve such results thanks to the strengthening of air defense and a large-scale repair campaign in the energy sector, which will continue. After all, the stability and reliability of electricity supply for industry and households is the key to the economic stability of the state,» said Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko.

According to the Ministry of Energy’s press release, in January 2024, the tendency to increase electricity generation by nuclear and generation facilities will continue.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in December 2023, the Ukrainian industry increased electricity consumption by 37.6% compared to December 2022 – up to 2.34 billion kWh against 1.69 billion kWh a year earlier. In November, domestic industrial enterprises consumed 25.7% more electricity compared to the same period in 2022 – 2.26 billion kWh versus 1.79 billion kWh.
