The company started sales of new steel products on the domestic market
Japanese steelmaker Tokyo Steel has launched it’s new Near Zero brand of environmentally friendly steel and started selling it in the domestic market. This is reported by Kallanish.
The production of this product has reduced carbon emissions from 0.4 tons of CO2 per ton of steel to 0.1 tons.
The reduction in emissions will be achieved by using electricity generated without fossil fuels. In addition to external electricity purchases, Tokyo Steel will also add its own solar generation and cooperate with Kyushu Electric Power.
The new steel brand covers all products manufactured at Tokyo Steel’s four plants in Japan. According to the company, Near Zero products have an additional premium of 6 thousand yen per ton ($37 per ton).
In June of this year, Tokyo Steel partnered with Stemcor to launch its own enso® green steel brand. This step will help maintain and expand its presence in the European Union market until the full implementation of the cross-border carbon adjustment mechanism (CBAM). As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Japan reduced steel production by 2.5% compared to 2022, to 87 million tons. The country was thus ranked 3rd in the global steel producer ranking by WorldSteel. Japan’s steel exports in 2023 reached 32.2 million tons.
