Thyssenkrupp to shut down casting and rolling line in Duisburg in the fall

In May 2025, new capacities will be put into operation

German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp has announced that it will shut down a casting and rolling line at its Duisburg site, Bruckhausen, in mid-November this year.

According to the company, the line was put into operation 25 years ago and is no longer able to meet future customer quality requirements.

The new continuous casting facility with a state-of-the-art hot rolling mill, which will replace the existing casting and rolling line, is scheduled to be commissioned in mid-May 2025. The preparatory excavation and foundation work for the major project is largely complete, and preliminary installation of various components of the new facilities has already begun.

Thyssenkrupp Steel emphasized that despite the planned structural restructuring of the steel business, the measures of the previous strategic program remain necessary and will be implemented. The total amount of investment in all projects is three-digit millions.

As noted, by optimizing its production network, the company continues to systematically focus its product portfolio on future markets and profitable premium products.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe will present the first proposals for the delayed construction of a green steel plant in Duisburg in August this year. These plans are intended to allow the company to switch to direct reduction steelmaking to gradually replace the blast furnace at its facility.
