The European Parliament supported the continuation of customs duties abolition on Ukrainian products

The European Parliament supported the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to extend for another year – until June 5, 2024 – the abolition of import duties on Ukrainian exports to the European Union. This was reported by Radio Svoboda’s journalist Rikard Jozvyak on Twitter.

The corresponding resolution was voted on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. 617 deputies voted, of which 537 were in favor, 42 – were against, and 38 – abstained.

The measure will be applied the day after publication in the Official Journal of the EU.

This decision was supported by the ambassadors of the EU member states through the meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper). A day earlier, the European Parliament Committee on International Trade gave the green light to continue the liberalization of the trade regime to support Ukraine’s economy.

Former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during the meeting with the executive vice-president of the EC Valdis Dombrovskis stated that Ukraine is counting on progress in the integration into the EU internal market and the extension of the duty-free trade regime with the European Union for another year – until the end of 2024. These steps and further deepening of trade relations are vital for Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression.

As GMK Center reported earlier, on May 24, 2022, the European Union adopted a resolution on cancellation of import customs tariffs for all Ukrainian exports for a period of one year.
