News Global Market CBAM 134 06 July 2026
The price for the period has been set at €75.28 per tonne of CO₂
The European Commission has published the reference price for the Cross-Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) certificate for the second quarter of 2026 — it stands at €75.28 per tonne of CO₂. This is stated in a press release from the Directorate-General for Taxation and the Customs Union (DG TAXUD).
The price for the first quarter was set at €75.36 per tonne.
Importers of goods covered by the mechanism must purchase the relevant certificates from February 2027 to cover their imports for the previous year (2026). In 2026, the price will be calculated as the average quarterly cost of allowances set at EU ETS auctions. From 2027, the European Commission will calculate and publish weekly prices.
The following quarterly prices will be published according to the following schedule:
- 5 October (third quarter),
- 4 January 2027 (fourth quarter).
As a reminder, CO₂ iq previously forecast that the price of CBAM allowances in the second quarter of this year would likely remain very close to the January–March level. Although carbon prices at auctions in the European ETS fell from over €90/t to around €60/t in the first quarter, they remained stable in the second quarter at €70–80/t.
As reported by GMK Center, the European steel industry has called on EU institutions to preserve the integrity of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) and strengthen the cross-border carbon adjustment mechanism. Major market players believe that a predictable and reliable policy framework is necessary for further investment.
