Production of zinc-coated steel products increased by 42%

In Q2 2021, production of polymer-coated rolled products in Ukraine increased by 32% to 13.8 thousand tons compared to Q2 2020, according to the review of the Ukrainian Steel Construction Center (USCC).

Consumption of coated coil in April–June decreased by 20% to 77 thousand tons compared to the same period last year. Of these, 58% fell on imports, while domestic production accounted for 13%.

In Q2 2021, imports of coated coil dropped by 23% to 67.3 thousand tons against the previous quarter.

DX51 grade steel predominates in the structure of consumption (49% of the total output). S220-280 grade steel accounts for 13% of the total volumes.

In Q2 2021, Ukraine’s exports of polymer-coated rolled products increased by a factor of 2.5 to 4.2 thousand tons compared to Q2 2020. According to USCC, Ukrainian producers increased their supplies of metal products abroad amid the growing demand and global prices.

“In Q2, prices for coated metal peaked and stabilized in June at their highest levels over the past decades. Despite a slight decline in prices, the shortage of metal in most market segments makes it possible for the manufacturers and traders to maintain a high level of prices,” says Denys Rysukhin, CEO of Metipol.

According to him, in the first half of the year, consumption of coated metal in the private construction market decreased by 30–35% compared to H1 2020.

In Q2, production of zinc-coated rolled products increased by 42% to 133.3 thousand tons against Q2 2020. Over the three months, exports increased by 62% to 78.8 thousand tons, while imports grew by 28% to 29.2 thousand tons.

In 2020, the volume of the Ukrainian market of polymer-coated rolled products increased by 15% to 362 thousand tons against the previous year. Domestic production expanded by a factor of 2.3 to 48 thousand tons, and imports increased 9% to 321 thousand tons.
