Biomethane is an effective alternative fuel, according to the president of the industry association

Biomethane is an effective alternative fuel that can help reduce direct emissions in the steel industry. This opinion was expressed by Antonio Gozzi, President of the Italian steel producers’ association Federacci, Ageei reports.

The industry association welcomed the Senate’s approval of an amendment to Article 5 of the pending Legislative Decree on Agriculture, which provides for the possibility of concluding biomethane purchase and sale agreements between its producers and enterprises in sectors that are difficult to reduce emissions.

According to Gozzi, the energy balance is the basis for achieving decarbonization goals.

«Therefore, all measures that encourage the use of alternative energy sources in various industries, guaranteeing a safe and clean energy supply, are welcome. Among them, biomethane represents a viable alternative to reduce direct emissions (Scope 1) from the steel industry,» he said.

In June, Federacciai and the Italian foundry association Assofond pointed to a significant difference in energy prices between Italy and the rest of Europe, which significantly affects the industry’s competitiveness. The presidents of these organizations called on the authorities to speed up the implementation of measures aimed at reducing the cost of gas and electricity in Italy.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the Italian steel industry leads the EU in terms of decarbonization, circularity and energy efficiency, according to the 2023 Sustainable Development Report for the industry published by Federacciai.
