ArcelorMittal has again called for the urgent implementation of new EU tariff quotas

The company is preparing to increase production at its European facilities in anticipation of changes in demand

ArcelorMittal continues to call for the urgent introduction of new tariff quotas proposed by the EC in October 2025. This is stated in the company’s announcement.

“The proposal is a crucial measure that is vital for the survival of the steel industry in Europe, and the long-term security of the manufacturing sector. Steel imports into the EU continue at record levels, causing serious harm to the EU steel industry,” the statement said.

ArcelorMittal has assured manufacturers and distributors that it will continue to meet their steel needs. The company is preparing to increase production at its facilities across Europe, anticipating changes in demand due to EU tariff quotas.

ArcelorMittal Europe CEO Geert Van Poelvoorde acknowledged that some steel consumers are concerned about the potential consequences of the future European trade instrument (supply shortages, price volatility, and access to specialized products). However, he stressed that there is enough steel produced in Europe to meet demand.

It should be recalled that EUROFER and industriAll Europe are calling for the urgent adoption of protective measures for steel. The social partners have called on the EU institutions to introduce new trade measures by April 2026. They noted that they do not currently foresee any improvement in the economic outlook for the metallurgical sector.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in October this year, the European Commission presented a proposal to protect the EU steel industry from the unfair impact of global overcapacity. This involves limiting duty-free imports to 18.3 million tons per year, which is a 47% reduction compared to the 2024 steel quotas, and doubling the duty rate on products outside the quota to 50%.
