Acciaierie d’Italia to increase production of thick rolled products

Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and the state, has planned an investment at a plant in Taranto to modernize a line for the production of thick rolled products and produce high-strength steel grades for large infrastructure projects. Affaritaliani informs about it.

These steps will facilitate the development of future Italian offshore wind platforms.

ADI in partnership with the think tank The European House-Ambrosetti, the shipbuilder Fincantieri and the companies Renantis and BlueFloat Energy created the «Floating Offshore Wind Community» project. The community aims to develop offshore wind capacities in different regions of Italy.

According to the steel company, Acciaierie d’Italia, and in particular the steel plant in Taranto, is involved in this project to develop floating offshore wind platforms for two reasons. First, ADI is a qualified and certified Italian producer of quality steel. Second, Acciaierie d’Italia is a major energy user, and to support the Taranto plant’s gradual transition to decarbonization and independence from fossil fuels, the company aims to increase its use of renewable sources.

ADI intends, in accordance with European directives, to promote and support the installation of large renewable energy installations. Their use will help reduce the carbon footprint of steel production.

In addition, the project will also contribute to the development of the port of Taranto, given its central position in the Mediterranean, which will help ADI and other industrial sectors.

The plant in Taranto already produces structural elements for onshore wind power plants.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the Italian government appealed to the EU with a request to cut funding in the amount of €1 billion for the Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI) project for the production of green hydrogen, which is planned to be used for the new DRI production plant in Taranto. The financing of the decarbonization of the enterprise will be provided through other national sources, which were not specified.

Also, in 2022 Acciaierie d’Italia produced 3.5 million tons of steel and 3.3 million tons of pig iron. Steel sales amounted to 3 million tons, in particular, rolled steel – 2.6 million tons, and thick sheet steel – 243.62 thousand tons. ADI’s revenue in 2022 amounted to €3.9 billion, and the EBITDA indicator – €327 million.
