Exclusive Italy saw a 6.2% m/m decline in steel production in April

Production of long products fell by 7.7% m/m, while production of flat products fell by 9.2% m/m

Italian steelmakers reduced steel production by 6.2% in April 2026 compared to the previous month, down to 1.93 million tons. Compared to the same month in 2025, the figure rose by 7.2%. This is according to data from the industry association Federacciai, as reported by SteelOrbis.

Flat steel production in April amounted to 743,000 tons, down 9.3% year-on-year and 9.2% month-on-month, while long steel production stood at 1.2 million tons (+12.3% year-on-year; -7.7% month-on-month).

In January-April, Italian steelmakers produced 7.57 million tons of steel, exceeding the 2025 figure by 2.9%. In the flat-rolled segment, 3.1 million tons were produced (-6.7% year-on-year), and in the long-rolled segment, 4.6 million tons (+10.5% year-on-year).

As reported by GMK Center, Italy increased its steel production by 3.6% in 2025 compared to 2024, reaching 20.7 million tons. In December, steel production volumes fell by 17.5% compared to the previous month but rose by 20.5% compared to December 2024, reaching 1.45 million tons.

Flat steel production last year rose by 3.8% compared to 2024, reaching 8.9 million tons, while long steel production increased by 5.5% year-on-year, reaching 12.3 million tons.

Overall, EU countries reduced steel production last year by 2.6% compared to 2024, to 126.2 million tons. In December, the figure rose by 3.9% year-on-year, to 9.9 million tons.
