Salzgitter wins contracts to supply pipes for Germany’s hydrogen network

Subsidiaries of steel producer to supply products for new FGL 702 project

German steel producer Salzgitter AG has announced the signing of major contracts with ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH to supply pipes for the construction of a new hydrogen pipeline, which is part of Germany’s main hydrogen network. This is stated in the company’s press release.

Under the contracts, Salzgitter subsidiaries Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH (MGR) and Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH (MLP) will supply 70.6 km of pipes (approximately 18,000 tons) and 38.2 km of pipes (approximately 6,000 tons) for the project.

The products are intended for the new FGL 702 project, a hydrogen pipeline running from Wewensleben to Salzgitter and from Angersdorf to Proislitz. It is another infrastructure component and an integral part of the hydrogen network, playing a role in the country’s energy transition and paving the way for green steel production in Salzgitter.

As noted, the integrated steelworks in Salzgitter will be converted to low-carbon steel production in several stages. Hydrogen is an increasingly important asset for the company’s steel production transformation program, SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2).

MGR will supply pipes with a diameter of 813 mm with a three-layer polyethylene outer coating and an inner Flowcoat epoxy coating. Approximately 4.5 km of pipelines will also receive an additional glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) coating.

MLP will supply 610 mm diameter pipes with a length of 18 meters, which will also be equipped with a three-layer external polyethylene coating and an internal Flowcoat coating applied at the Hamm site. Approximately 6 km of the pipeline section will have an additional glass-reinforced plastic coating.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in February 2027.

In February this year, the German government confirmed additional funding of €322 million for Salzgitter’s plans to produce steel based on green hydrogen. The new amount is in addition to the €1 billion initially allocated in 2022 under the European Projects of Common Interest scheme.
