Zaporizhstal suspended production due to a complete emergency power outage

At the end of last year, the plant was shut down for about two days for similar reasons

As a result of a Russian drone attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure on January 7, an emergency power outage occurred in the Zaporizhzhia region. The Zaporizhstal steel plant and other energy consumers in the region lost their external power supply. As a result, the plant was forced to suspend all production processes. This was reported in a statement by the plant.

The plant’s personnel responded quickly and efficiently to the emergency situation, implementing anti-crisis measures to safely shut down the equipment. The clear and coordinated actions of the personnel, as well as coordination with the region’s energy services in accordance with established safety protocols, made it possible to avoid man-made accidents as a result of the sudden power outage.

“The plant’s staff is currently working to stabilize the internal power grid. Under conditions of limited power supply, routine maintenance is being carried out on the main units in order to prepare for a phased and safe restart of the production process, which will only be possible after the external power supply is restored,” the statement said.

We will remind you that on December 23 last year, as a result of rocket fire, Zaporizhstal also suffered a complete power outage, which led to an emergency shutdown of production. At that time, the plant’s personnel quickly switched to alternative power sources and organized a controlled and safe shutdown of production units. On December 25, Zaporizhstal resumed its work.

In 2025, the Zaporizhstal steel plant increased its production of pig iron by 16% y/y – to 3.6 million tons and steel by 11% y/y – to 3.2 million tons. Rolled steel output grew by 15% y/y – to 2.8 million tons.
