Imports account for more than 37% or 450.9 thousand tons
In January-April 2025, Ukraine increased its consumption of steel products (rolled products and semi-finished products) by 19.1% compared to the same period in 2024, to 1.199 million tons. This is evidenced by the data of Ukrmetprom.
Over 4 months, Ukraine imported 450.9 thousand tons of steel products, up 28.2% y/y. Imports account for 37.6% of the domestic rolled steel consumption market. The share of imports in domestic consumption of steel products increased by 2.68 percentage points y/y.
The structure of imports is characterized by a significant dominance of flat products over long products – 78.86% and 19.12%, respectively. In January-April 2024, the dominance of flat products over long products was also significant – 82.88% and 15.27%, respectively.
In 4 months, Ukrainian steelmakers produced 1.98 million tons of rolled products, up 0.5% year-on-year. The company exported 1.23 million tons of steel products, down 6.4% y/y.
The domestic market received 748 thousand tons of rolled and semi-finished products, up 14.2% y/y. In January-April, Ukrainian steelmakers increased shipments to the domestic market, with exports accounting for 62.3% of total output over the period, up from 66.8% a year ago.
The share of flat products in export shipments increased to 44.9%, up from 40.4% a year earlier. The share of long products in export deliveries increased to 19% from 14.2%, while the share of semi-finished products fell to 36.1% from 45.4%.
The main export markets for Ukrainian rolled steel products in 4 months of 2025 are the European Union (79.7%), the rest of Europe (10.2%) and the CIS (6.8%). Among steel importers, the first place is occupied by other European countries (57.9%), followed by the EU-27 (24.3%), and the third – by Asian countries (17.3%).
As GMK Center reported earlier, consumption of steel products in Ukraine in 2024 decreased by 6.26% year-on-year – to 3.288 million tons. Over the year, 1.235 million tons of steel products were imported, up 10.2% y/y, and about 4.17 million tons were exported, up 39.7% y/y. Domestic production amounted to 6.22 million tons (+15.8% y/y).
