The import of finished steel products increased by 31.8% in the first half of 2022
US steel enterprises in January-July 2022 increased steel imports by 10.4% compared to the same period in 2021 – up to 19.5 million tons. American Iron and Steel Institute’s (AISI) data informs about it.
The volume of finished steel products in the total volume of steel imports in the USA in January-July 2022 amounted to 15.72 million tons, which is 31.8% more compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, in July 2022, the United States reduced steel imports by 5.7% compared to the previous month – to 2.67 million tons. The volume of finished steel products in the total volume of steel imports for the month was 2.27 million tons. This is 2.1% more in compared with June 2022.
The main sources of steel imports in the USA, based on the results of 7 months, are Canada, Mexico and Brazil – 4.12 million tons, 3.41 million tons and 1.81 million tons, respectively.
In 2021, the USA increased import of steel by 43% compared to 2020 – to 31.5 million tons. The import of finished steel products for the year decreased by 41% – to 22.8 million tons.
The United States is among the ten largest steel producers in the world according to World Steel. In 2021 the country increased steel production by 18.3% compared to 2020 – up to 86 million tons.
