Total steel imports for the month also fell by 16.8% m/m
According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), US steelmakers reduced their imports of rolled steel by 16.8% month-on-month to 1.402 million tonnes in August 2025.
Total steel imports (rolled products and semi-finished products) for the month also fell by 16.8% month-on-month to 1.86 million tons.
The largest volume of imports was accounted for by products for the oil industry – 155,520 tons (-9.7% month-on-month), hot-dip galvanized rolled steel – 128,000 tons (-17.2% month-on-month), wire rod – 120.81 thousand tons (+5.6% m/m), cold-rolled coil – 92.33 thousand tons (-31.8% m/m). Finished products accounted for 75.2% of total imports for the month.

In January-August, the US reduced its imports of rolled products by 10.6% compared to the same period in 2024, to 13.897 million tons. Total steel imports amounted to 18.729 million tons (-7% y/y). The main volumes of supplies are accounted for by products for the oil industry – 1.423 million tons (+17.4% y/y), hot-dip galvanized rolled steel – 1.260 million tons (-39.8% y/y), and cold-rolled flat products – 1.102 million tons (-17.2% y-o-y).
The main sources of steel imports to the US in January-August 2025 are Canada, Brazil, and Mexico – 3.41 million tons (-24.5% y-o-y), 3.15 million tons (-6.9% y-o-y) and 2.22 million tons (-2.7% y-o-y), respectively.
As reported by GMK Center, in 2024, the US increased its imports of rolled steel by 3.7% compared to 2023, to 22.5 million tons. Total steel imports (rolled products and semi-finished products) for the year increased by 2.5% y-o-y to 28.86 million tons. The main sources of steel imports to the US in 2024 were Canada, Brazil, and Mexico – 6.56 million tons, 4.49 million tons, and 3.52 million tons, respectively.
Steel production in the US in 2024 fell by 2.4% compared to 2023, to 79.5 million tons. Overall, global steel production for the year amounted to 1.84 billion tons, down 0.9% year-on-year. Thus, the US is among the ten largest steel-producing countries in the world according to World Steel.
