The permitted volume of rolled steel imports into the United States in August 2022 was 2.063 million tons

For 8 months of 2022, the total imports of rolled steel into the US (including permits in August and volumes delivered in July) was 16.1 million metric tons (mt). This is 28.5% more than in the same period of 2021. American Iron and Steel Institute’s (AISI) data informs about it.

The share of imports in the rolled steel market in the United States in August 2022 is estimated at 23%.

Applications for steel import permits in August 2022 amounted to 2,195 mt. This is 7.2% less compared to 2.367 million tons of permits registered in July 2022.

The permitted imports of rolled steel into the United States in August 2022 was 2.063 million tons, which is 9.3% less than the total imports in July 2022.

The total amount of applications for the import of steel in the USA in August 2022 was distributed by country as follows:

  • Canada – 532.4 thousand tons (+8% compared to July 2022);
  • Mexico – 434.4 thousand tons (+4%);
  • South Korea – 183.2 thousand tons (-28%);
  • Brazil – 97 thousand tons (-58%);
  • Vietnam – 97 thousand tons (+110%).

In the first 8 months of 2022, the most steel was delivered by Canada (4.26 million tons, +1% y/y), Mexico (3.5 million tons, +35% y/y) and South Korea ( 1.77 million tons, +10% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, US steel enterprises in January-July 2022 increased steel imports by 10.4% compared to the same period in 2021 – up to 19.5 million tons.
