Tata Steel increased steel output in India by 11% y/y in April

The company’s Dutch branch produced 1.55 million tonnes of steel during the reporting period, whilst its UK branch produced 0.48 million tonnes

The Indian steelmaker Tata Steel recorded steel production of 5.82 million tonnes at its plants in India for the first quarter (April–June) of the 2026–2027 financial year. This represents an 11 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, according to SteelOrbis.

Domestic sales for the period also showed positive growth, rising by 11 per cent year-on-year to 5.17 million tonnes.

The automotive and special products division recorded its highest-ever first-quarter production volumes, reaching around 0.9 million tonnes. The branded products and retail segment also set a new record for the first quarter, recording a figure of around 1.7 million tonnes.

Sales volumes in the industrial goods and projects sector amounted to around 1.6 million tonnes. This was driven by strong demand for value-added products, as well as the company’s strengthened position in promising sectors such as shipbuilding, container manufacturing and data centre construction.

Tata Steel’s Dutch subsidiary (Tata Steel Netherlands) produced 1.55 million tonnes of steel during the reporting period, whilst sales totalled 1.40 million tonnes. The company’s operations were affected by the shutdown of the direct sheet plant in April. Meanwhile, local environmental authorities have already granted permission for test runs, which are currently underway as part of preparations for a full resumption of operations.

In the UK, Tata Steel reported sales of 0.48 million tonnes, continuing to meet customer demand by further processing purchased rolled steel. In parallel, work is progressing on the construction of the planned 3 million metric tonnes per annum electric arc furnace at Port Talbot.

As reported by GMK Center, Tata Steel is moving towards its long-term goal of expanding its steel production capacity to 40 million metric tonnes per annum. According to the announced roadmap, Tata Steel will create additional production capacity of 4.8 million tonnes at Neelachal Ispat Nigam (NINL), one of its subsidiaries, and 2.5 million tonnes at the Tata Steel Meramandali plant.
