Poland’s JSW exceeded plans for coal production and sales in Q1

The company mined 2.86 million tons of coking coal, up 5% over the plan

Poland’s Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), the largest coking coal producer in the EU, has announced the production results and key indicators of the Group’s Technical and Economic Development Plan for January-March 2025. The data shows that the planned volumes of coal and coke production and sales were exceeded.

According to the report, in January-March 2025, the company produced 2.86 million tons of coal, which is 104.8% of the planned volume (2.73 million tons). The main reason for the positive dynamics was the initiatives under the Strategic Transformation Plan implemented at the end of 2024.

The overperformance of the coking coal production plan was particularly significant – 2.32 million tons instead of the expected 2.18 million tons (106.4%). At the same time, steam coal production fell slightly short of the plan, by 0.54 million tons out of 0.55 million planned (98.4%).

Coal sales also exceeded expectations: a total of 3.01 million tons were sold, which is 103.7% of the plan (2.90 million tons). Sales of coking coal amounted to 2.49 million tons, which is 104.4% of the planned 2.38 million tons. Thermal coal sales amounted to 0.52 million tons (100.5%).

In addition, in the first quarter of 2025, the company produced 0.70 million tons of coke (100.7% of the plan) and sold 0.74 million tons (101.3%).

JSW notes that the data takes into account both the positive impact of new transformation initiatives and the losses due to the accident at the Knurów-Szczygłowice mine on January 22, 2025, where a methane fire occurred. The expected decrease in annual production due to the incident is estimated at 800 thousand tons.

As a reminder, on May 20, 2025, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa announced force majeure due to a fire at the Budryk mine. The incident occurred on May 7, 2025, and forced the company to temporarily block the hazardous mining area due to endogenous ignition. According to preliminary estimates, JSW will lose about 345 thousand tons of coal in 2025.

In 2024, JSW reduced its coal production by 9.3% (12.3 million tons) and coke production by 8.6% compared to 2023 amid difficult geology and operational challenges. The company recorded a net loss of PLN 7.3 billion last year.
