The event will address current issues facing the sector and solutions for businesses
The Kallanish Global Flat Steel 2026 conference will take place on 23 September in Istanbul (Turkey).
The event will bring together representatives from global flat steel supply chains to discuss current challenges facing the sector and business solutions.
In recent years, flat steel markets have been affected by record-high Chinese exports, which have led to a fall in global prices and triggered a series of trade disputes that have altered the structure of trade.
Despite falling consumption and protective measures, the EU remains a key market for flat steel suppliers. However, the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has complicated trade with the bloc. At the same time, imports into the EU from 1 July 2026 will be further restricted by a new steel trade regime. That said, this creates opportunities for suppliers of low-emission products, such as Turkish steelmakers operating scrap-based electric arc furnaces (EAFs).
The development of flat steel production in electric arc furnaces in Europe is hampered by issues with the distribution of clean energy, insufficient scrap recycling and problems with the supply of low-emission steel.
The impact of the CBAM is forcing India to seek alternative markets where it can place its growing production of flat steel based on blast furnace technology. The US market continues to follow its own trajectory; coil prices rose in 2026, but imports remain unattractive for the time being.
Global activity in the automotive and general manufacturing sectors remains subdued against a backdrop of higher production costs and pressure on consumer purchasing power. As a result, consumption of flat steel products is still awaiting a boost. At the same time, the conflict in the Middle East is yet another ‘black swan’ event which is forecast to hold back global economic growth and demand for steel in 2026, whilst keeping fuel prices high for some time to come.
The following issues will be discussed during the conference:
- the regionalisation of the global steel market,
- the outlook for global steel demand,
- raw material costs and security of supply,
- an overview of end-user sectors (automotive, construction, household appliances, etc.),
- flat steel trade and supply chains,
- decarbonisation and technologies in the steel industry,
- the short-term outlook for flat steel prices.
