
Electric arc furnaces at China's Hubei Shunle regularly achieve 50 melts per day
Two Quantum electric arc furnaces from Chinese steel producer Hubei Shunle, supplied by Primetals Technologies, have set a world record by consistently achieving up to 50 melts per day. This is an unprecedented level of productivity for EAF-based plants, according to a statement from Primetals.
Chinese steel producer Hubei Shunle has successfully implemented two Quantum EAFs at its site in Hubei Province, where the plant produces 2 million tons of high-strength seismic reinforcement per year. These electric arc furnaces deliver exceptional performance, resulting in significant cost savings.
The electric arc furnaces regularly perform 50 melts per day, both consistently achieving a time from melt to melt of less than 28 minutes. During 48-50 melts per day, the power-on and power-off times are approximately 25 and 3 minutes, respectively. The efficiency of the EAF Quantum is also confirmed by its low power consumption (less than 312 kWh per ton) and oxygen consumption (less than 28 cubic meters per ton).
According to Primetals, the Quantum electric arc furnace features several technological innovations that contribute to its high productivity.
The waste gas utilization system preheats scrap using waste heat from the production process, which significantly reduces energy consumption during melting. The scrap preheating function also reduces start-up time compared to other electric arc furnace technologies. These solutions result in lower operating costs and reduced carbon emissions. Another key feature is the FAST system.
Primetals Technologies holds several patents related to EAF Quantum. Currently, 15 such installations are in operation worldwide, and new ones are being installed.
Hubei Shunle manufactures a wide range of steel products, including threaded products, steel wire, steel pipes, carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel. Together with Primetals, the company is exploring opportunities to expand its partnership, focusing on the application of innovative technologies, the implementation of green steel technologies, and the integration of smart manufacturing solutions.
MAEGMA Minerals, part of the Malaysian industrial conglomerate Melewar Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Primetals Technologies to build a 2 million tonne per year hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant in Perak, Malaysia. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2029.
