Ukrainian steelmakers increased the export of long products by 2.4 times m/m in August

Steel enterprises of Ukraine in August 2023 increased the export of long products by 2.4 times compared to the previous month – up to 65.6 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the export of such products increased 2.2 times m/m – up to $42 million. This is evidenced by State Customs Service’s data.

Compared to August 2022, in August 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine decreased revenue from sales of long products by 30.2%. Export volumes increased by 4.9% year-on-year.

In January-August 2023, Ukraine exported 346.1 thousand tons of long rolled products worth $269.3 million. Revenue from sales of products abroad decreased by 48.1% compared to the same period last year, and export volumes – by 34.6%.

The most exported in 8 months was hot-rolled rods and bars in coils (HS 7213) – 147.1 thousand tons for $94.6 million. In August, 18.9 thousand tons were shipped (+111.5% m/m) for $11.1 million (+113.3% m/m). 82.3 thousand tons of carbon steel wire (HS 7217) for $76.8 million, in August – 11.6 thousand tons (+23.2% m/m) for $76.8 million (+18% m/m) also were exported.

The top three among types of long rolled products in terms of export volumes from Ukraine in January-August 2023 are other rods and bars made of carbon steel, without further processing, screw (HS 7214) – 74.4 thousand tons for $43.8 million. In August steel companies increased the export of such products by 6.6 times compared to the previous month – up to 30.8 thousand tons. Income from its shipment increased by 6.1 times m/m – up to $17.2 million.

The largest consumers of Ukrainian hot-rolled rods and bars for 8 months of 2023 are Romania and Poland – 41.7% and 26.9%, respectively, in monetary terms. Poland (39%) and Germany (20.6%) consumed about 60% of Ukrainian-made wire. Among the main buyers of other rods and bars are Moldova (23.5%) and Iraq (30.3%).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the export of long rolled products by 59.7% compared to 2021 – to 748.95 thousand tons. The revenue of steel producers from the export of such products fell by 55% year-on-year – to $693.53 million. Hot-rolled rods and bars in coils were exported the most (HS 7213) – 406.6 thousand tons for $310 million, which 56.1% and 54.2%, respectively, less than in 2021.
