Transportation of ferrous metals for the month amounted to 567,000 tons
In August 2024, JSC Ukrainian Railways (UZ) reduced the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 11.9% compared to the previous month – to 2.321 million tons. Compared to August 2023, the indicator increased by 69.1%. This was reported to the GMK Center by the press service of the railway operator.
1.109 million tons of raw materials or 47.8% of export shipments of iron ore were transported to seaports. Through land crossings – 1.212 million tons (52.2%).
Transportation of ferrous metals for export during August amounted to 567 thousand tons, which is 21.4% more compared to the previous month, and 56.8% compared to August 2023. In the direction of ports, 406 thousand tons of relevant products were exported (71.6% of the total export of ferrous metals), and through land crossings – 161 thousand tons.
In total, in August 2024, UZ transported 14.18 million tons of cargo, which is 4.2% more than m/m and by 15.5% y/y.
«Massive rocket attacks have significantly affected the state of the energy industry, certain types of industry, transport infrastructure, which affects the dynamics of cargo transportation,» the US said.
In export traffic, 6.58 million tons of cargo were transported per month, which is 2.8% more than m/m and 99.4% y/y In the structure of export transportation, the first place is occupied by grain – 2.63 million tons (40.1% of the total processed cargo). In second place is iron ore – (35.3%), in third – ferrous metals (8.6%).
In January-August 2024, export transportation of iron ore amounted to 22.83 million tons (+2 times y/y), grain – 23.5 million tons (+ 59.3% y/y), ferrous metals – 3.49 million tons (+15.1% y/y). In total, over the period, UZ transported 118.04 million tons of cargo, which is 24.3% more year-on-year. 57.74 million tons of cargo were transported for export (+ 65.8% y/y).
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, which is 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons less compared to 2022. Transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, grain – increased by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
