Ukrainian Railways transferred about 600,000 tons of iron ore to Hungary in January-July

In January-July 2024, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) transferred 595 thousand tons of iron ore through border crossings with Hungary, which is 30.8% less than in the same period of 2023. This was discussed during a meeting of representatives of the Ukrainian Railways with Hungarian carriers, reports Rail.insider.

In general, since the beginning of the year, UZ transferred 1.703 million tons of cargo to Hungary, which is 42% or 1.21 million tons less compared to January-July 2023.

«The gear drop is recorded on both joints. Thus, 1.197 million tons of goods were transported through the crossing Batyovo – Epereshke. The decrease compared to the same period last year is 955,000 tons, or 44%. 506,000 tons were transferred through Chop-Zahon. This is 255,000 tons, or 34% less than in seven months of 2023,» said Valeriy Tkachev, deputy director of the transportation technology and commercial work department of Ukrainian Railways JSC.

The main cargo transferred through Ukrainian-Hungarian border crossings is iron ore. In second place in terms of volume of transportation is grain – 469,000 tons (-66.1% y/y). Cement transportation in 7 months amounted to 147,000 tons.

In July 2024, Ukrainian Railways increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 65% ​​compared to July 2023 – to 3.6 million tons. In total, 13.6 million tons of cargo were transported during the month, which is 12% more compared to with the same period of 2023.

As GMK Center reported, at the end of 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, which is 1.5% or 2.2 million tons less than in 2022. Transportation of solid fuel decreased by 13.2% y/y, to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, grain – increased by 5.9% y/y, up to 30.6 million tons.
