Ukrainian Railways to purchase an additional 10,000 tons of rails from Voestalpine Rail Technology

Ukrainian Railways (UZ) and Voestalpine Rail Technology GmbH have signed an agreement for the supply of another 10,000 tons of rails from the Austrian manufacturer. This is stated in a report from the railway operator.

It is noted that thanks to this shipment, Ukrainian Railways will be able to carry out major repairs on another 80 km of track. The additional shipment is the result of savings from previous successful competitive tenders.

The purchase is being made with funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as part of the Emergency Support for Ukrainian Railways project. Taking into account the aforementioned agreement, the total volume of contracted supplies will amount to approximately 46,000 tons. This will make it possible to build and repair 358 km of track.

The new batch of rails will begin to arrive after the completion of the main deliveries, approximately in May 2026.

As noted by Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine – Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksiy Kuleba, it is necessary to ensure the stability of Ukrainian logistics despite daily shelling and attempts by the Russian Federation to disrupt internal transport links.

“Thanks to transparent competitive bidding and the support of international partners, we have additional supplies,” he stressed.

It should be recalled that Ukrainian Railways plans to process 44 million tons of iron ore in 2025, which is only 2.3% more than in 2024, but 43% less than in pre-war 2021. The total volume of cargo transported this year is expected to reach 160 million tons. This is 49% less than in 2021 (315 million tons) and 7.5% less than the previous year. At the same time, in 2026, the railway plans to transport 161 million tons of cargo, which is 1 million tons more than this year.
